Kinetic Therapy™
Kinetic Therapy™ helps to reduce the risk of patients
developing atelectasis (the collapse of alvoli) and pneumonia and
treats the complications of immobility.
Kinetic Therapy™ is the use of a bed that turns
continuously and slowly greater than 40° along its longitudinal
axis to prevent pulmonary and other complications associated with
patient immobility.[xix]
Patients on a ventilator are at high risk of developing
pneumonia, and depending on the duration of the ventilation and the
other preventative measures in place, the rate of
ventilator-associated pneumonia can be as high as 50% of
patients.
This pneumonia can lead to:
- increased morbidity
- increased costs
- substantially higher mortality[ii]
Regular manual patient turning from one side to the other has
been shown to prevent skin breakdown, but is ineffective in the
prevention of atelectasis and pneumonia[i].
In patients suffering from acute lung injury, the supine
position is associated with hypostatic oedema (the accumulation of
fluid in the gravitation dependent lung regions) and atelectasis
(the collapse of alvoli) of the dependent (dorsal) lung
regions.
The clinical use of Kinetic Therapy™ can be divided
into prevention and therapy, while the mechanisms of beneficial
effects can be both:
- a significant reduction of atelectasis (the collapse of
alvoli)
- an improved clearance of bronchial
secretions[i]
